The United States embassy in Syria tells Americans to leave, warn about ‘imminent potential attacks’

London – The American embassy in Syria has warned all US citizens who leave the country due to “the greatest possibility of attacks” during Eid al-Fit holidays at the end of March, which marks the end of Ramadan in the Muslim world.

The Embassy published a notice on its website on Friday night warning citizens of possible attacks aimed at “embassies, international organizations and Syrian public institutions” in the Syrian capital Damascus.

“Attack methods could include, among others, individual attackers, armed gunmen or the use of explosive devices,” said the embassy notice. “Leave Syria now,” he added.

The current travel notice of the State Department for Syria is at level 4, its highest alert, which means that Americans are advised not to travel to the country for any reason.

“This notice is still in force due to the significant risks of terrorism, civil disturbances, kidnapping, hostage, armed conflict and unfair detention,” said the embassy on its last notice.

The United States Embassy in Damascus suspended operations in 2012 shortly after the civil war broke out between the regime of former President Bashar Assad and a mosaic of rebel groups. Assad was deposed at the end of last year for a collection of opposition forces led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. HTS leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, is now the interim president of Syria.

“The United States government cannot provide any consular or emergency consular service to US citizens in Syria,” the embassy wrote. “The Czech Republic serves as the power of protection for US interests in Syria.”

“American citizens in Syria who need emergency assistance must contact the US interest section of the Embassy of the Czech Republic,” he added.
